COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Turkey Grand Prix, which was the second leg of the Meteksan FITA Archery World Cup, took place in Antalya, Turkey June 7-10 with the U.S. sending both a men’s and women’s recurve team under the direction of new National Head Coach, Kisik Lee.
Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill) was the highest finisher for the U.S. Team, finishing the individual competition in 13th place. Miller defeated 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist Alison Williamson (Great Britain) in the first round of the individual elimination by a score of 107-106, then went on to beat Barbora Horackova (Czech Republic) easily 102-97, before losing in the 1/8 round to Korea’s Oh Yun 109-103.
Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), a 2004 Olympian, finished right behind Miller in 14th place in the women’s recurve category. Nichols was also eliminated in the 1/8 round, but not before beating France’s Cyrille Dalamare 107-104 in the first round, and Mexico’s Janeth Garcia 105-88 in the second round. Nichols lost 105-102 in the 1/8 round to China’s Jialinkg Qian, who went on to win the gold medal. Korea’s Yu Mi Kim and Tuk Young Lee took the silver and bronze respectively.
Also competing for the U.S. in the women’s recurve category was Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.), who lost to Iwona Marcinkiewicz (Poland) 102-98 in the first round of elimination. Lorig finished the competition in 53rd place overall. Mandy Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.) did not make the 64 person cut to the elimination round after finishing the qualification round in 79th place.
Four-time Olympian Butch Johnson had the highest finish for the U.S. men taking 21st place overall in the individual competition. Johnson defeated Aliaksei Zinouchyk (Belarus) 110-104 in the first round, before falling to Bulgaria’s Yavor Hristov 109-108 in the second round. Jason McKittrick (Holton, Ind.) fell to Yoann Palermo (France) 107-98 in the first round of elimination. McKittrick finished the competition in 62nd place. Kyung Mo Park (Korea) took the gold medal in the men’s recurve category, while Japan’s Hiroshi Yamamoto claimed the silver and Hristov took the bronze.
Nate McCullough (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and current Chula Vista Resident Athlete Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas) also competed for the U.S. in the Turkey Grand Prix, but did not make the cut for the elimination round. McCullough barely missed the cut, finishing the qualification in 65th place. Krueger finished in 78th place.
Both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams lost in the first round of the team event. The men’s team of Johnson, McKittrick and Krueger fell to Mexico 208-204 and the women’s team of Lorig, Jennifer Nichols and Mandy Nichols lost to Italy 213-208. Japan took the team gold for the men, while Great Britain claimed silver and Korea took the bronze. For the women, Korea took the gold, China grabbed the silver and Ukraine took home the bronze.
